The Line 3 Legal Defense Fund provides support to people facing arrest, jail time, and state repression because of their opposition to Enbridge’s Line 3 pipeline project. The fund is a volunteer-run nonprofit organization that is based out of the Twin Cities. They were founded in 2019 and will continue to operate for as long as is needed. Flexible and adaptable to the needs of defendants, they rely on community donations to help as many defendants as possible.

“We are so grateful for the risks that water protectors took to stop the pipeline, and so excited to support them!

In 2021, we supported many different aspects of the movement to stop Line 3 as different financial needs emerged. From late 2020 to early 2021, we supported primarily with the payment of cash bail. We spent over $50,000 in bail funds during that time.

Starting in the fall of 2021, our mission shifted from the payment of bail to solely supporting defendants as their cases moved through the court system, and providing financial support for fines, fees, transportation to court, and other defendant organizing costs. There are over 900 line 3 related arrests from the past year, and many of those defendants have pledged to go to trial. As many court cases are from December of 2020 through September of 2021, they are proceeding slowly, but we have had an uptick in requests from defendants as their court processes move.

To date, we have disbursed over $207,000 directly to water protectors. Last year we also launched a website, began fundraising specifically for felony defendants, and began coordinating with other groups who are providing mutual aid for defendants who need housing or transportation. We will continue to support defendants and dole out funds until every last case is resolved and the water protectors from the fight against Line 3 have the support they need.”
