12/5: Come Learn About Medical Aid in Dying and VSED

What options for a peaceful death are available to Minnesotans suffering from a terminal illness?

One may be Medical Aid in Dying, but only if the Minnesota legislature passes the End-of-Life Options Act in the next legislative session. The law would enable a mentally competent adult with less than six months the option to request from their physician medication that would lead to a peaceful death. Another is VSED—voluntarily stopping eating and drinking—currently legal in all states.

Come learn about both at a presentation in the sanctuary Tuesday, December 5 at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Harlan Limpert. Rev. Limpert is a Unitarian Universalist minister and Co-founder of Minnesota Interfaith Clergy for End-of-Life Options. He also volunteers for Compassion and Choices, the largest non-profit organization in the United States whose mission is to improve care, expand options and empowering everyone to chart their end-of-life journey.

2023 Sleep Out

Thank you to all the youth and chaperones who participated in this year’s Sleep Out. Every year it helps our community explore the profound notion of belonging and raises awareness about housing instability and eviction issues in the Twin Cities. The Sleep Out also serves as a way to celebrate and tap into the power of our collective compassion. More photos from the evening are available here, thanks to Fred Hulting!

The Climate Justice Committee Was Busy This Summer!

Committee members spent time getting educated about commercial recycling and composting and demonstrating for environment protection. A group of 12 toured the Shakopee Mdewankanan Sioux Community Compost facility, more than 20 toured the Eureka Recycling facility in Minneapolis and several attended the gathering to support closure of HERC. Check out some of the pictures from their work this summer and read their reflections below.

We gathered reflections from those who attended the tour of the Eureka Recycling facility in Northeast Minneapolis. Here’s a compellation of a few of them below:

Walk For Peace and Justice

UUCM is a sponsor for this year’s historic Walk for Peace and Justice on September 30. The walk is a demonstration of our commitment to build a better world, where all are treated with dignity and respect. The event starts at Brackett Park in Minneapolis at 9:30 a.m. and ends with a walk to the Lake Street bridge where Mayors Jacob Frey and Melvin Carter are invited to commit to work to eradicate all forms of violence in their cities. Vote Climate is hosting a celebratory event at the Danish American Center after the walk. Sign up here or more information contact Sue Fust. Registration is free but donations will be used to support nonviolence programs in the Twin Cities. Check out the invitation video below from one of the organizers!

Bag It! Documentary Screening

Please join the Climate Justice Group this Friday, September 22 at 7 in the UUCM Sanctuary for a screening of the documentary Bag It! Stick around for a discussion afterwards too. The documentary uses humor to teach about the use and dangers of plastics in our environment. “See how our crazy-for-plastic world has finally caught up to us and what we can do about it. Today. Right now.”
