Know Your Rights Workshop

UUCM is hosting an in-person Know Your Rights Workshop presented by Lupita  Herrera from the Legal Rights Center of Minneapolis on Wednesday, September 20th at 6:30 p.m.

Would you like to know more about protecting your rights when interacting with police? Your rights in school? At a protest? How about if you’re stopped while driving? This workshop will help you be better informed and prepared if you have an encounter with police or the criminal law system. American Sign Language, Spanish and Somali language interpreters will be  available. The event is free and open to all. For more information about the Legal Rights Center of Minneapolis is available here. We are looking forward to having you join us!

Soul Matters Circles Return This Fall!

Whether you’re new to UUCM or are a long-time member, we invite you to join a Soul Matters Circle this year at UUCM! These groups offer the opportunity to explore the monthly themes and connect with each other and our deepest selves.

You can sign up online now here!

This year we’re offering two Circles which will meet once a month for 1.5 hours from September-June. One Circle will meet in person on Sundays, and the other will meet Monday nights via Zoom. Susan Goll will facilitate the in-person gatherings and Rev. Lisa will facilitate online. Please see the class dates below.

Participants receive a resource packet each month with background information, questions for discussion and contemplation, spiritual exercises, wise words and other suggested resources. In each meeting, we share what it was like to “live with” the exercises and the questions as we share where the topic took us, and hear the experience of others. This sharing is at the heart of the Soul Matters program and our experience is further deepened by the group’s sharing.

Newcomers and friends are especially welcome, and childcare is available! Reach out to Rev. Lisa with any questions.

From the Board: September 2023

Each month, a member of the board will share a reflection on the Soul Matters monthly theme. The theme for September is Welcome. This month’s post is offered by Brian Zais.

My maternal grandparents’ house in Stanley, Wisconsin, was the embodiment of welcoming at Thanksgiving.  We never quite knew until the end of the meal how many people would be there.  We had the usual family members (Mom and her 3 brothers, plus their significant others and kids) that were there most years.  My great grandmother—known to the family as “Little Grandma” due to her diminutive stature, not her personality—was there until her sudden death after one infamous Thanksgiving dinner that became a warning in our family: don’t take a third helping of squash.  (There’s a longer story there…)  That was 18 people already.

UUCM Auction 2023: Come celebrate the Roaring 20’s!

The UUCM Auction is held each year to create a fun community-building event for our members and friends, and to raise money for the UUCM General Fund. The Auction has grown to be one of the most anticipated events on the UUCM Social Calendar and our largest fundraiser. The 2023 edition of our annual Auction will include an in-person live and silent auction at church on the evening of Saturday, November 4th, and an online auction from October 27th  to November 5th.  The live auction will also be open to Zoom participants, and we will continue with the popular online bidding from Friday October 28th to Sunday November 6th.

The auction website may be found at https://charityauction.bid/uucm2023. This year’s theme is “The Roaring 20’s”, and we hope that you will participate in the auction fun. Put the dates on your calendar and plan to engage in the online and in-person events.

And since the auction cannot happen without donations, please consider donating an item, event, or experience.  To make a donation, please use the form at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/uucmauction2023 by Midnight on Monday, October 24th.  You can find ideas for donations by browsing these past catalogs.

We look forward to your participation in the auction.  If you have any questions, please contact Fred Hulting or Karen Hulting.
