Shut Down the HERC Trash Burner

If you live in Hennepin County’s 6th District (Hopkins, Wayzata, Long Lake, Orono, Mound, Shorewood and Edina) please join us next Thursday, May 11 from 2-3 p.m. to deliver a petition to councilmember Chris LaTondresse. We’ll meet in the East Room at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church, 3121 Groveland School Road, Minnetonka 55391. We would love to pack the room. If you can’t make it in person please consider joining us through this Zoom link. The petition will be at church Sunday if you would still like to sign it.

Beacon Lobby Day & Capitol Rally for Housing Justice

Thank you to all the UUCM members and friends who joined the Beacon Lobby Day and Capitol Rally for Housing Justice on Monday, March 20. Hundreds of people turned out to the rally to urge our lawmakers to prioritize fully funding rent support for Minnesotans in need. Bring It Home Minnesota would help make sure low-income Minnesotans don’t have to spend more than 30% of their income on rent. The plan has support from key DFL legislators in the House, Senate and governor’s office—so it could face fewer roadblocks to passage than previous years.

After the rally, our UUCM group visited our elected representatives in the Minnesota State House and Senate. Rev. Lisa joined several other faith leaders in delivering a message to the rallygoers and our lawmakers. She explains why our faith as Unitarian Universalists calls us to support our community in this way. Social Justice Ministry Chair Mike Elliot was able to capture it on camera and you can watch it here and please view more images from the day here.

Please Bring IOCP Food Donations This Sunday

UUCM’s Social Generosity Recipient throughout March is Interfaith Outreach Community Partnership (IOCP). The most-needed items include pull-up diapers, cereal, cooking oil spray, canned meat and pasta sauce. We’ll be dropping off all UUCM donations at IOCP on March 31. For questions, reach out to Hannah Lynn, Karen Heuiser, or a member of the Social Justice team.

Immigration Justice Update

UUSC Family Celebrations

  • A Chrome Laptop was donated to the family. 
  • The family is on a wait list for a program offering reduced internet rates for qualifying households.

UUSC Family Needs

  • Rides to dentist appointments the evening of March 21st and the morning of March 23rd.  Refer to Signup Genius for additional opportunities to help the family: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E4BA9A82DA6FACE9-volunteer
  • Assistance studying for the Written Drivers Test in Spanish
  • Technology support as they learn to navigate their Android phones and the laptop.
  • Donations:
    – Tall shelving for additional storage in their family room
    – Big bath towels
    – Monetary Donations to allow us to spend $200/month on groceries for their continued food security.
