UUSC Family Support Update

Thank you for your generous support for the UUSC family we are working with. They’re very appreciative of your donations and gifts of time. Please consider helping the family as they prepare for tax season. Every family member works at MisterCar Wash.

We’re in need of 1 person to help translate from Spanish for their tax assistance appointment in Brooklyn Park on Monday, March 6 (with Laurie Young from MSUS). You will translate as Laurie helps family members complete online forms.

The family also needs 2 people to help with Spanish translation on the evening of Tuesday, March 14. We need help translating during their appointments with Prepare and Prosper in St. Paul, an agency that provides free tax assistance. The appointment starts at 7:15 and could last 2-3 hours.

We’re looking for 2-4 drivers on the evening of Tuesday, March 14th to transport family members (1 way or both ways) from Brooklyn Park to their 7:15 p.m. appointments with Prepare and Prosper in St. Paul and back to Brooklyn Park afterwards. The appointments could last 2-3 hours.

Please contact Lori Arnold if you’re interesting in helping!

If you’re looking for additional opportunities to help the family, check out our Signup Genius form here.

The family is also looking for some donations for their home including:

  • Tall shelving for additional storage in their family room
  • Big bath towels

If you’d like to help with a monetary donation, you can help the family with their continued food security. We support them with $200/month for groceries.

March 20 Lobby Day & Capitol Rally for Housing Justice

Join the big push to pass Bring It Home, Minnesota — legislation that would fully fund rental assistance in Minnesota. Make your voice heard at two events coordinated by our community partner Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative!

Lobby Day 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

REGISTER HERE to join others in our districts to meet with state legislators to get their support. Be sure to register so that Beacon organizers can plan legislator visits. Training will be provided. We’ll have snacks available, and there will be time to grab lunch at one of the cafes in the capitol.

Capitol Rally 1:30-2:30 p.m.

REGISTER HERE to rally and make some noise in the capitol to let lawmakers know about the huge support for Bring It Home, Minnesota. Beacon’s goal is 1,000 attendees! UUCM’s goal is to have 15 people participate in the rally. You can help make that happen!

Get on the bus! 8:15 a.m. departure – 3:15 p.m. return

For folks going to both events, UUCM is partnering with other churches in the area to take a bus to the capitol. The bus leaves the UUCM parking lot at 8:15 a.m. and returns right after the rally, about 3:15 p.m. We’ll sing songs and have snacks and enjoy the ride together! Let Mike Elliot know if you want a spot on the bus.

UUSC Family Support Update

Thank you for your generous donations for the family we are supporting. They’re very appreciative of the clothing and household items, as well as your gift of time driving them to and from appointments. We met with the family last week to celebrate their successes in 2022 and hear about their priorities for the year ahead. Together, we set some short term and long term goals

They need your help to accomplish these goals!

Spanish language skills are helpful, but not necessary. We’ll connect you with great apps for translation services to bridge the communication gap.

Please consider helping by…

Legislative Letter Writing Pizza Party

February 26, 11:301:00
Community Room

The Minnesota legislature has before it many important bills that could have a huge impact on improving Minnesotans’ lives. Contacting our elected officials is a powerful way to influence policy, so let’s get together, enjoy some pizza, and write letters asking for their support.

We’ll have sample letters, paper, and postcards available to make it easy to get your voice heard on a number of important bills, including Bring It Home Minnesota, Minnesota Care for All, rezoning to support Mills Church’s affordable housing project, and others. We’ve invited our neighbors from Mills Church to join us for the party.
