From the Board: June 2021

Each month, a member of the board will share a reflection on the Soul Matters monthly theme and the state of the church. The theme for June is Play. This month’s post is offered by Becky Halat.

Summer—it’s when we have fun in the sun. Our theme for June is Play, and it can’t be mere coincidence that beach balls and baseballs rotate like our playground Earth moves. We love the sun, its energy, and its radiation. It’s the source of life, and we appreciate summer like the green plants that convert the sun into life.

Especially in Minnesota, warm weather gives us the urge to get out and play, since we know that our time in the sun is limited at this high a latitude. Summer 2021 is a double-whammy, with vaccinations up and Covid-19 infections down. We play, with the solemn knowledge that not everyone made it here. Continue reading →

Minister’s Message 6/2/21

This week’s message celebrates the Unitarian Universalist tradition of Flower Communion. Rev. Lisa shares her experience that it is not only the unique beauty of each flower that matters to this ritual, but also the sturdy strength of the vase.

REMINDER In addition to our virtual Flower Communion service on Sunday, we hope you will stop by and participate in our in-person activities:

Saturday, June 5, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Bring a flower to exchange, shop and participate in the Climate Justice plant exchange, and join in family games for all ages (games will end at 2:30 p.m.).

Sunday June 6, noon-1:00 p.m.
Come take a flower or participate in the plant exchange, if you were unable to do so on Saturday. If you are new to UUCM, join Rev. Lisa & Gary Charles for a socially distanced tour of the building.

Social Generosity Offering: June 2021

PNHP

PNHP Minnesota is the Minnesota branch of Physicians for a National Health Program (over 12,000 members) whose purpose is to establish universal single payer health care (or Medicare for All) in MN and in the United States. It is widely recognized that our health care delivery system is broken, and many experts realize that the only way to fix it is to expand Medicare so that it covers all residents. We pay twice what other developed countries pay for health care, yet over 30 million are uninsured, over 50 million are underinsured and our health outcomes are worse than the rest of the developed world.

Our primary purpose is to educated health care workers and the general public about the importance of M4A (Medicare for All Program). Currently we have a summer intern program for 5 second-year medical students to educate them on this subject and to get them involved in advocacy with their legislators. Those of us who have worked for many years on this effort feel that now is the time to strike. We are encouraging everyone who is interested to communicate with their legislators regarding the importance of this effort. There are strong bills in the MN legislature and the US Congress which would provide needed health care for all residents at a cost less than what we currently spend.
