Final Auction Info Session

THIS SUNDAY, October 25 After Church
Karen and Fred Hulting are hosting an information session on Sunday at 11:15am to answer your questions about the Auction coming up in November. Curious how we are going to do it online? Have an idea for a donation, but not sure how to make it “COVID-safe”?  Want to be reassured that Marc Doepner-Hove will be the auctioneer?  Come to the session and learn all about the new twists on an old tradition! Check you Friday Update for the Zoom link and contact Fred or Karen with any questions.

Come one! Come all! To the greatest show on Earth!

Or, at least the greatest virtual live auction that UUCM has ever seen!

If the auction is your favorite social event of the year, you won’t want to miss this one—we’re keeping as much of the tradition and nostalgia as we can. Marc Doepner-Hove as auctioneer? We’ve got that! The Hultings working hard behind the scenes to keep track of everything? We’ve got that! Amazing social events to bid on hosted by our very own members and friends? You guessed it—we’ve got it! People bidding against themselves? Negotiations for how many extra seats the host can accommodate? Costumes? Laughter? We’ll have all that, too, if you come and participate!

If you’ve never attended the auction and can’t imagine why you’d want to, you won’t want to miss this one—it’s new, it’s different, it’s not JUST an auction! It’s a Maskerade party with entertainment! Sarah Huckabee Sanders (aka the fabulous MaryAnn Wiborg) will be stopping by with important Public Service Announcements that you won’t want to miss. Our very own funny-men and stand-up comics (Noel Martinson and Bill Arnold) will take the stage to keep you laughing. Sam Brandt and Brian Zais are teaming up to bring you some pandemic-appropriate jazz. Jeffrey Hatcher and a great cast of 9 crowd favorites and talented newcomers will be putting on a serial skit to keep you on the edge of your seats throughout the entire event. And, finally, if you’re worried about staying awake through another Zoom meeting, we’ve got some interactive plans to keep your hands and mouth busy, too—watch your mailbox right around Election Day.

What have you got to lose? It’s free, it’s fun. Go out to the auction website right now (http://charityauction.bid/uucm2020) and register to attend and participate. And while you’re there, take a look at the amazing items that have been donated to the silent auction. See you on November 7th at 6:30!

Minister’s Message 10/21/20

This week’s message marks the first snow of the season and calls us to face the coming winter with courage and creativity. Rev. Lisa offers a brainstorm of ideas and invites us to take note of one or two that we might put into practice this year. She’d also love to hear your suggestions (revlisa@uucmtka.org)!

Board Update on Anti-Racism Efforts at UUCM

Fred Hulting, President, Board of Trustees
boardpresident@uucmtka.org

After a fast onboarding for our new Minister, the Board and Reverend Lisa Friedman have been focusing this past month on COVID-19 preparedness, planning collaboration on our Developmental goals, and developing approaches for the church to advance anti-racism efforts. In this update I want to focus on the important work on anti-racism.

Because of the efforts of many members, we have seen some great activities offered to the congregation, from the My Grandmothers Hands study groups to efforts by the Social Justice Ministry to collaborative education programs with other area churches. This is a great start to our journey; but it is clear that we need to do more.

As both individuals and as a group, the Board has found it difficult to know how best to proceed; there are many different paths we could take.  Recognizing that we need to get moving and that we may not get it right, the Board has aligned on three next steps.

Why Doesn’t UUCM Have a BLM Banner on Our Building?

A New Process for UUCM Public Statements
Becky Halat, Board of Trustees

The board has received several communications from members asking what work the church plans to do around anti-racism in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. One specific question that has emerged from some of these emails centers around making a public statement about the BLM movement (most specifically, hanging a Black Lives Matter flag on our building.)

Fred Hulting, our UUCM Board President, recently published an article dedicated to the actions that our church has already taken around anti-racism efforts, as well as encouraging more work to be done. We’re very happy to see that our church community is showing passion and resolve around anti-racism. As a largely white congregation, our privilege is a power that we certainly can’t ignore.
